Experimental Analysis | Om by John Smith

Image
This piece best fits under the structural form of Personal View. Throughout the film John Smith tackles the topic of stereotypes and how many human beings will stereotype a person from the way they look without giving it a second thought. It does this by showing a simple image of a bald man on the screen wearing a orange robe he then sames "Om" and drag it out to make a humming noise which goes onto last the whole video. This image makes the viewer think that he is a Monk and then a man with a razor comes into shot with a razor and begins to cut the mans hair. However, this doesn't immediately change the opinion of the stereotype the viewer has made its only until we get to the end of the video and the razor turns off and the humming stops and the robe is removed that we, the viewers, realize that he isn't a Monk and in fact is just a young man having his hair cut. In the Bordwell & Thompson piece it says "Experimental films are made for many reasons. Th...

Sound Piece Analysis | Meat Factory Ear Worms (2008)

The first main element in this sound piece was the sharpening of the knife. This was played throughout the clip no matter what the narrator was talking about. Whether he was in the Blood Bath or the skinning section of the production line the sound of the knife was always present. Other main elements where the two songs that where in the clip. These where heard multiple time throughout the clip while he was singing along with the song or it was being played on the radio in the car. The sound of the knife both sharpening and cutting into either the hide of the cows or the skin of his own leg, coupled with the description from the narrator had a very dramatic and violent effect on listener, as this will have created a violent scene with their mind. The two songs however had a different effect in that they added a sense of routine to the clip. The juxtaposition created by the use of the songs and the violent sounds together could have thrown the audience off. However, it is more likely ...

Short Film Analysis | Salaryman (2002)

Image
Salaryman is a film trying to show the mundane way that people live in the 21st century using the uniformity and clinic look of each of the shots to show this. Also Knight decided to use widescreen throughout the film giving the impression that the man was an insignificant part of a much larger picture. However, the main focus of the film doesn't lie within any of these themes. The film is made to focus on the struggles of Amnesia and to raise awareness for those who suffer with it. The films premise is a story of a man living in Japan trying to piece together the life he lives and person he is with the aid of a pocket camera he carries on him everyday. As a growing number of people suffer from some kind of memory loss these days it is possible that the Director (Jake Knight) has either himself suffered from this or had a close loved one suffer from it and had to look after them, this would be what would lead someone to creating a film about this subject matter to voice t...
