Sound Piece Analysis | Meat Factory Ear Worms (2008)

The first main element in this sound piece was the sharpening of the knife. This was played throughout the clip no matter what the narrator was talking about. Whether he was in the Blood Bath or the skinning section of the production line the sound of the knife was always present. Other main elements where the two songs that where in the clip. These where heard multiple time throughout the clip while he was singing along with the song or it was being played on the radio in the car.

The sound of the knife both sharpening and cutting into either the hide of the cows or the skin of his own leg, coupled with the description from the narrator had a very dramatic and violent effect on listener, as this will have created a violent scene with their mind. The two songs however had a different effect in that they added a sense of routine to the clip. The juxtaposition created by the use of the songs and the violent sounds together could have thrown the audience off. However, it is more likely that it got them more invested in the clip as many people can related to that kind of juxtaposition between their own jobs and the music they listen to while they are working.

This piece was successful in creating the scene of the day to day life of a butcher and the work within a meat factory. The use of not only the main sounds but the narration and all the other sounds from within the factory helped to create a full scene in which the listener could be immersed. Also the sounds used as the narrator described cutting into his own leg and the sounds used when he described cutting into the cattle's hide helped create the dramatic and violent effect that it had on the listener.
