Documentary Analysis | Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul

The theme focused on in Skateistan is community and how a simple hobby such as Skateboarding can bring together communities from anywhere to avoid the fighting and conflict and focus on building a connection with one and other.
At the beginning of the film we see a montage of clips showing the poorer and war torn areas of Kabul which is then juxtaposed with the happy and smiling faces of three young skaters. This helps us see how the Skateistan project is helping these kids and giving them a better lifestyle through a simple thing as skateboarding. It shows how something we take as a simple hobby which we take for granted can actually make a huge impact and difference to these children's lives.

The theme of a community is show at its fullest when we get to the skate park. Here we see many children from Kabul coming together to enjoy themselves and escape the war, crime and fighting which is happening everyday in there country. "Juxtaposing the harsh reality of life in Kabul with the hopes and ambitions of the country’s children, the film is a touching ray of light from a country only ever in the news for all the wrong reasons." - (Skateistan Vimeo description)
